CyberSex, Is It Cheating?

Credit: Getty ImagesWith the popularization of e-mail messages, and workday hours being spent hammering on computers, cybersex has become a common practice and a replacement for the real thing. New moral issues have surfaced from this innovative form of lovemaking.

One question often brought up by our readers is whether or not we should consider cybersex as
cheating, especially when one of the partners participating in the dialogue is already involved with a soul mate.
Is Cybersex Cheating?
Most men that work in big corporations have experienced some form of cybersex with a co-worker and sometimes even with total strangers. How exactly can cybersex be defined? It is the art of having suggestive verbal sexual intercourse without any physical contact.

Basically, by typing away on a keyboard, a man and a woman can experience virtual sex and near euphoria. Although the whole idea behind having sex through a computer screen is unconventional, it can relieve stress usually associated with sexual encounters and provides a source of security for insecure individuals.

Most men and women consider cybersex to be cheating, even if it involves no physical contact. Let's face it, while writing away passionately and getting increasingly sexually aroused, how many of us would actually say "no" if a person of the opposite sex was standing right next to us and felt the same way?

In general, most men would take this sexual opportunity and deal with the regrets and remorse of cheating on a loved one later. Obviously every man is innocent until proven guilty, and until then, it is still a virtual act with no consequences. Perhaps once faced with this opportunity, many men would decline the offer out of respect for their mate.
Relationships And Cybersex
Although there is no physical interaction during cybersex, the simple fact that you are divulging your secret fantasies in writing to someone else, other than your mate, probably means that your relationship is not adequately satisfying your needs. In fact, relationship experts say that if an individual in a committed relationship needs to be satisfied with someone other than their mate's sexual fantasies, this signifies that some of their primary needs are not being fulfilled. In this case, the couple needs to discuss their sexual problems and see if they can be fixed.

At this point, even though the relationship might need some work, cybersex could be considered a healthy hobby, if carried out only to the first level. It is fair to say that men in general need the feeling of a challenge, and virtual sex provides them with this opportunity.Cybersex For Entertainment
Another reason guys get into cybersex, is simply because it provides easily accessible, online entertainment, which accelerates the pace of a nine to five day. For many men, entry into cybersex is a game, and the goal is to seduce a female counterpart. The challenge of arousing someone of the opposite sex can create excitement and a reason to come to work in the morning.

Men involved in both cyber-relationships and real ones should let their cyber-partner know that they are not available for further "real life" experiences and that it is simply a game. It might remove some of the spice from the action, but this is the morally correct thing to do.

The question of whether or not cybersex is cheating is not easily answered. The level of intensity with which the cyber flirting is conducted, should be a good benchmark to evaluate whether or not cheating is involved. If messages remain within the limits of simple compliments, then there shouldn't be any worry and consequences; in fact it can actually be beneficial for all involved.

On the other hand, if e-mails during cybersex become too explicit and graphic when you are already dating, the issue can be more debatable and worrisome.

A little trick to minimize the risk of friction is to think of your soul mate when it comes to the intensity of the content. Would you be happy to find out that she is experiencing a high level of graphic cybersex with one of her co-workers behind your back? The answer to this question should indicate whether or not a cyber-relationship is ok when a man is already involved. Next time: some cybersex techniques and where to find cyber-partners.

Good luck! Always practice safe sex.
