Circumcision & Clitoral Swelling

Bianca BeauchampQuestion 1

Does circumcision make erections difficult because of the reduced sensitivity? Are men who are not circumcised more prone to suffer from premature ejaculation? Does circumcision make any difference for women?
-Curious George

Dear Curious George,

There is some validity to the point that circumcision slightly reduces sensitivity and that it may be extra-sensitive for uncircumcised men. This effect, however, is very minor and will not make much difference to most men. I highly doubt any women can feel the difference either way. The only thing is that un-cut men will have to pay extra attention to their cleanliness. It is very easy for bacteria to get inside the vaginal area, and consequently cause infections and other irritations for women.

Question 2

I have no problem finding my girlfriend's clitoris. I find, however, that it does not swell up the way I have seen happen with other women. Am I doing something wrong? I would like very much to feel that she is aroused. Any reasons for this?
-Adam G.,

Dear Adam G.,

The thing you need to understand is that all women are different and their bodies react differently to pleasure. Physiological changes occur in her entire body including the clitoris, labia, vagina, and breasts. Her muscle tension, heart rate and blood pressure increase. When the head of the clitoris swells, it also retracts, or "hides", under its hood.

Your girlfriend may be shaped differently and her clitoris may be more hidden, making it harder to see it swell. Also, keep in mind that it is not a penis. The change in size is much more subtle and more difficult to notice. You can look to other parts for feedback on how much she is enjoying what you are doing.

Question 3

I recently began sleeping with my girlfriend and I enjoy our sex life thoroughly. There is one thing though -- I never seem to be able to insert my penis into her vagina on my own. She always has to insert it with her hands. Is this just inexperience, or is there some technique I can use to get in on my own?
-Wally

Dear Wally,

You can try to use some lubrication on the tip of your penis, her inner lips and her vaginal opening. You can use your own hand to guide yourself in, or try to open her lips to make it easier. Keep in mind that she may enjoy doing it herself. She gets to take you inside her the way she likes it and at her pace. This will ensure that you don't go too fast and gives her some control. Enjoy that wonderful sex life of yours.Travis Miller

Question 4

Is it normal for a man to have an orgasm without an erection? I can often achieve orgasm without an erection. I have no medical conditions and have been able to do this all my life. Is this common?
-Alexander

Dear Alexander,

You should not worry about this. It is perfectly normal, and many men who cannot get erections are still able to ejaculate. If it makes you feel better, see a doctor to make sure everything is in order.
